When the wind is in your hair, the sun is setting on the horizon and the yacht is gliding through the ocean, some want for nothing more than silence so as to absorb the atmosphere around them, whereas others like music to enhance the experience.

Our yacht delivery skippers and crew cover millions of miles on a variety of boats and in varying conditions. Be it on a trans-Atlantic delivery to the Caribbean or just a short hop across the English Channel, there’s a song that will transport most of them back to that special moment.

Top Ten Songs For Sailing:

10) Eurythmics – Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This):

This classic song particularly reminds our skipper Richard about the time he was on delivery from Rio de Janeiro to Cape Town. The 45ft racing yacht was surfing down some large waves and they were reaching speeds in excess of 20 kts.

9) Richard Hawley – The Ocean

Crew member John has selected a very mellow track by Richard Hawley. He prefers to listen to music and relax once the delivery has been completed. A perfect song he says to accompany a cold beer whilst sitting out on the veranda of a waterside bar, watching the other yachts passing by.

8)   Proclaimers – I’m Gonna Be

A blast back to the 1980’s with crew member Issy’s choice. She was delivering a new Hanse 505 from the Baltic to Scotland and decided that the crew must all listen to Scottish music as they approached the Clyde. With limited choice available The Proclaimers were selected. Everyone knew the words and they all sang along as the sun went down.

7) Explosions in the Sky – First Breath After Coma

Skipper Tom loves this tune and in particular it reminds him of a delivery to the Mediterranean. As they passed the Spanish Coast there were 9 lighthouses and cardinal marks that synchronised perfectly with the music. The dolphins were also dancing on the bow. A moment that will never be forgotten.

6) The Feeling – Sewn

Crew member Martyn said that the music never stopped during their delivery from Antigua to the UK. An eclectic mix ranging from Hard House to Classical. Whoever was on watch had the music queued up and ready before they took the wheel. His favourite was The Feeling (Sewn) and now every time he hears this track he is transported back to the middle of the Atlantic. Happy memories indeed!

5) Camo & Krooked – Hot Pursuit

Crew member Oliver loves this song and it reminds him of the time he was training on board a Class 40 yacht on the Solent in 25kt winds. One of the most exhilarating experiences he has ever had, both the yacht and crew were screaming with delight!

4) Sailing By – The BBC Shipping Forecast Theme Tune

This iconic tune is a stark reminder of the pre-digital age. Weather forecasts were limited to specific times of the day. The format of the classic BBC Shipping Forecast is still fondly revered by any of us older sailors today and it will always bring a smile to crew member John’s face when he hears it.

3) Bill Withers – Ain’t No Sunshine

Nothing beats bobbing through the ocean under full sail, and the rhythm of this tune seems to fit sailing perfectly says delivery skipper David.

2)  David Gray – Sail Away

This song is one of delivery skipper Tim’s favourites. The lyrics speak volumes, “sail away with me”, and it reminds him of the time he was delivering a new Dufour 56 to Gibraltar. Downwind sailing along the Portuguese Coast, Spinnaker flying and the kettle on!

1)  Pink Floyd – Comfortably Numb

Pink Floyd was a very popular choice with our skippers and crew. So many great tracks to choose from, hugely atmospheric and Pink Floyd are certainly not afraid to produce long and complex songs that seem to fit perfectly with the pace of life on board any yacht!

What is your favourite music to listen to when sailing? We would love to hear your top tunes and in particular any special moments that they remind you of!
